Right ascension is equivalent to longitude on Earth.
Right ascension is designated in hours, minutes, and seconds.
Declination is equivalent to latitude on Earth.
Declination is measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
How do we use right ascension and declination to find an object in astronomy? To find a star in the sky, you would use its coordinates to locate it. The following is an example of an object’s coordinates:
RA 20h 59m 32.2s Dec. +23° 44’ 17”

If you face the north celestial pole, the stars will rise, or ascend, on your right. Therefore, we call it “right ascension.”
