Ingredients:
Cake:
1 box of your favorite 2-layer cake mix (any flavor)
Additional ingredients required per package directions
Icing (makes approx 3 cups):
1 1/3 cup unsalted butter or margarine (don’t use light versions), softened
1 1/3 tsp vanilla extract
5 1/3 cups sifted confectioners sugar (approx 1.3 lbs)
2 to 3 tbs water
red food color
blue food color
Tools Needed:
9x13” cake pan
3 qty - 12” disposable decorating piping bags or use a clear freezer storage bag with one bottom corner cut off diagonally about 1/4"
Standard size coupler for decorating tip
Star tip for decorating bag (the larger the tip size, the larger the star, and the faster you can decorate)
Directions:
Prepare cake mix according to directions on cake mix box for 9x13” cake. Bake as directed. Let cake cool completely before decorating.
Prepare icing while cake is cooling.
Cream butter and shortening with mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed. Icing will appear dry when all sugar has been mixed in. Add water and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. If icing appears dry, continue to add more water is very small amounts. Keep icing in a covered container until ready to use.
Tint icing with food color as follows. Add enough color until desired color is achieved:
Tint 1/2 cup icing blue
Tint 1 1/4 cups icing red
Remaining icing is white
Once cake cooled, put cake on serving board or cake plate.
Decorate Cake In This Order:
Prepare 3 disposable decorating bags. You will use one tip for entire cake. Wash tip after each color change.
Ice sides of cake smooth with white icing using dull knife or cake decorating spatula.
Outline design of flag by using toothpicks to mark off stripes of flag as follows (see diagram below):
Mark off blue stars area of flag using toothpicks. Dimensions are approx 4 3/8” high x 6” wide.
Mark off 13 stripes along lengthwise direction of cake using toothpicks as a guide. Poke a toothpick along edge at each stripe. Each stripe approximately 5/8” wide.

Fill in blue rectangular area using star tip with blue icing, piping stars close together to cover cake.
Pipe all white stripes using star tip with white icing.
With white icing, pipe all 50 stars on top of blue section using diagram below.
Pipe white icing shell border using star tip along top edge of cake. To make shell border, squeeze out icing to build shell and then pull decorating bag to the right and down while releasing pressure on decorating bag. Your shell should have a tail. On top of the tail, make the next shell and pull right and down to make another tail. Continue along entire top edge of cake until complete.
Fill in remaining areas with red stripes using star tip with red icing.
Pipe red icing shell border using star tip along bottom of cake. Use same technique as white shell border.
